How to Resolve the E-Waste Challenge

How to Resolve the E-Waste Challenge

Dr. Moses Amweelo
July 13, 2012

ACCORDING to UN statistics, the global community produces a total of 40 million tonnes of e-waste every year - loaded into trucks the waste constitutes a chain that easily reaches around the globe.

Due to rapid product innovations and shorter replacement cycles, especially in ICT (IT Association SA- Industry Waste Management Plan, 2011), e-waste constitutes the fastest growing waste stream, specifically in developing countries, with estimates indicating that volumes could triple over the next five years.

E-waste is term used to cover almost all types of electrical and electronic equipment that have reached their product end of life cycle. It comprises three main categories, namely ICT and office equipment (e.g. desktop pc's, laptops, copy-/fax machines, cell phones, and telephones); consumer electronics (e.g. TV, radio, HiFi's, speakers) and household appliances (e.g. kettles, irons, vacuum cleaners). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) refers to Electronic Waste as "electronic products that are discarded by consumers."

Electronic waste is not just waste, it contains some very toxic substances, such as mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, beryllium and brominated flame retardants. When the latter are burned at low temperatures they create additional toxins, such as halogenated dioxins and furans - some of the most toxic substances known to humankind.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Storage, and Waste Management for Consumer Electronics, Computer Equipment, and Mobile Phones: Market Analysis and Forecasts

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Storage, and Waste Management for Consumer Electronics, Computer Equipment, and Mobile Phones: Market Analysis and Forecasts

Electronics Recycling and E-Waste Issues
By: Pike Research

As the adoption of consumer electronics, mobile phones, and computer equipment continues to increase around the world, the business and environmental challenges associated with electronic device disposition at end-of-life (EOL) grow greater and greater. Pike Research anticipates that, as devices become obsolete and are replaced, the total volume of EOL electronics, which is known as e-scrap, will more than double between 2010 and 2025, placing increasing pressure on industry players, governments, and advocacy groups to find new ways to expand electronics recycling and reuse. E-scrap that is not recycled, reused, or stored becomes e-waste and is buried, incinerated, or dumped.

R2 Practices: Making your IT asset disposal choice easy

By: R2 Solutions

According to a recent survey conducted by Converge, IT managers at mid- to large-size companies cite data breach from discarded computers as the number one concern when disposing of IT equipment. Environmental practices, ensuring proper e-waste disposal, and finding asset disposition support for remarketing or reusing equipment were also top priorities listed in this report.

The R2 Standard addresses all of these areas of concern, so you can be sure that your IT equipment is managed according to the highest industry standards while meeting your organizational goals and needs. Every certified R2 recycler has been rigorously audited by an independent third party auditor that evaluates each recycler in more than 50 areas of operational and environmental performance.

E-waste, and not energy conservation, is what really matters

By David Moschella

When it comes to environmental sustainability, the information technology community has seriously mistaken its priorities. Our latest research has confirmed what we have been saying for four years. The IT industry is already energy-neutral in terms of its consumption and savings, but there is still no credible scenario for safely managing the global production and disposal of literally billions of personal computers, mobile phones and other electronic devices. Yet even today, improving the energy efficiency of IT equipment is still the overwhelming focus of the Green IT community.

While energy efficiency is recommended business hygiene, the total energy consumption of IT hardware is not a serious societal problem. Most estimates suggest that all of the world's data centers, PCs and networks consume between 1.5% and 3% of the world's energy. While precise measurements are always difficult, does anyone seriously doubt that the IT-enabled energy savings stemming from e-commerce, telecommuting, teleconferencing, digital newspapers, virtual offices, smart buildings, smart products, etc. aren't enough to offset this?

The weather is just right?

The weather is just right?

I have lived in Ohio most of my life and cannot recall a time when the weather has been so sporadic. Moving to Columbus from the Cleveland area came with a vast improving on the weather conditions. I explain northern Ohio weather with terms like lake effect, and snow storms, and extreme cold. So far this year I believe that I have witnessed the strangest weather of my 33 years. Some days are warm and some cold. I believe that every Ohioan can agree that this winter season only strengthens our claim for the strangest weather in the United States.

Marion County Recycles Electronic Waste

-Over 19,000 lbs collected

Marion collaborated with local businesses to collect more than 19,480 pounds of electronic waste at its event on June 11. The Marion County Recycling & Litter Prevention Office partnered with Buffalo Wild Wings, Perkins Family Restaurant, Accurate IT, City of Marion, Marion County Commissioners, Marion County Council on Aging, and Servex Electronics to assist in this collection event.201120Marion20Recycling20Sign

"This is the first ever TV collection in the county. More and more recycling centers and landfills are refusing to take televisions because they are a hazard and expensive to safely process." - Angela Carbetta, Recycling Coordinator for Marion County Recycling & Litter Prevention

This electronics drop off event was open to businesses and schools instead of just residents. Accurate IT Recycling Services of Columbus collected all types of electronics for free, except for televisions. Because of the costs of processing, there was a $15 recycling fee for TVs.

Participants received food coupons from Buffalo Wild Wings and Perkins and a chance to enter a drawing for a flat-screen television from Servex Electronics.

Marion County's first TV drop-off a success

Marion County's first TV drop-off a success

MARION - Organizers of the first Marion County recycling collection to allow televisions didn't know what to expect before Saturday.

They quickly discovered it would be a success when they saw a line of vehicles waiting an hour before they opened in front of Buffalo Wild Wings and didn't see the line slow down throughout the afternoon.

Marion County Recycling and Litter Prevention partnered with the city and Accurate IT Recycling Services of Columbus to collect all types of electronics including computers and televisions. MCRLP Director Angie Carbetta said it was the first time a collection in the county accepted televisions, widely not accepted because they are a hazard and expensive to process.

Collection event in Marion will take TVs; electronics from schools and businesses! Saturday June 11th

MARION - An electronics drop off Saturday will be the first opportunity for a television collection in the county and is open to businesses and schools instead of just residents.
Accurate IT Recycling Services of Columbus is collecting all types of electronics, free for every device except televisions.
Because of the costs of processing, there is a $15 recycling fee for TVs.
Mayor Scott Schertzer connected with the Marion County Recycling and Litter Prevention to get the collection organized, he said.
"Recycling is not mandatory, but generally people think it's a good thing to do," he said.
He was looking to get more people to participate in curbside recycling, and the idea blossomed out of that with investigation into the city's recycling program, Schertzer said.
Most drop offs where electronics are accepted are restricted to residential services. This one will be open to all kinds of businesses and schools.
"It's a good thing for everybody when we recycle," he said.
